Hi Karen,

No, grant funding is not exclusive to nonprofits. Would you mind going to the "Contact Us" page and sending your contact info? I can give you better feedback that way.

We are interested in finding funds for our project. Are non-profits the only recipients of grant dollars? We have a very worthwhile community economic development project and are seeking funds to complete our historic/LEED project.

Thank you.

Mark,

While I appreciate the sentiment and can relate to being a highly-skilled professional who doesn't currently have the income to match what previous accomplishments would have predicted, I have to object to essentially ignoring milestones, especially ones that recognize your skills, make you more valuable to potential clients, and are big paychecks themselves.

I'm going to take the time to celebrate and enjoy my blessings. I'm not dwelling on any of the awards from the past year, but I hope to build upon the recognition, however temporary.

Mariam,

Don't let getting your creative writing award go to your head. When I was going through grad school, I received a Creative Performing Arts scholorship for my architectural design prowess. I was nominated for this award by several of my professors. And the award even came with a cash stipend that helped me pay for my last year in grad school. But what has that award given me now? I'm living Life Laid Off as a professionally licensed architect who is doing a lot of pro-bono work and is spending the fair amount of his spare time between finding meaningful employment with volunteering work. Oh, sure, I am meeting a lot of great people - you included - but a guy needs to feed his family with something and I don't think the paper in which the award was printed on would get much on E-Bay right now.

You should be concentrating on finding your next big paycheck...that is what I am doing!

Peace,

Mark

Thanks, Lynette! You know, I was trying out an automated DM tool and I was wondering if/how it worked. :) I'm now following you on Twitter, and I'm glad to meet another writer and educator. I look forward to learning more tools and tactics from you and sharing more of my stories with you.

Thanks for sending me info about your websites through a Twitter direct message. I couldn't be more impressed.

I wish you'd follow me on Twitter so I could send you a direct message . . .

In any case, I'll keep my eye on your writing—and on your research company, since I write creative nonfiction, too.

[...] Rule #1: Have a clips package full of articles you wrote or edited for your university’s newspaper. I have loved the written word since childhood, but in college, I applied my talent to my major, my minor and the other classes that required written work. My only formal education in creative writing came after I graduated: I attended UCLA’s Professional Screenwriting Program. I volunteered for an organization that needed writers for its newsletter. I continued writing in my journal. And when I was laid off, seeking a new career and figuring I had nothing to lose, I took my newsletter clipping and asked the editors at a publication to give me a chance. About 18 months and 30 published stories later, they’re still giving me assignments, and my regular column in another publication adds another 14 clips to the growing collection.
It is very satisfying if you hear your work is just worth it. Satisfying because you can see the fruits of your hard work. Writing a proposal in not an easy job, as you have said it is time consuming, while you are working with a tight deadline, but at the end of the road, you can see success.
